Where Did Functional Patterns Come From?

Functional Patterns was founded by the great mind, Naudi Aguilar.

Functional Patterns is about training organisms in relation to their biological characteristics.

Sound a bit complicated? Well, not really when you think about it. At a basic level it means whatever animal you choose to train, you do it with the foremost goal of optimizing its primary functions. Fish swim, birds fly, and dogs walk on four legs.

What do humans do?

According to the leading research on the primary movements humans did for locomotion and survival: standing, walking, running, and throwing were the four most important movements for human survival.

Our muscles and joints are designed to do these things above all else.

When we combine what we know about human movement, evolution, and physics - we can begin to understand the potential that the human body really has.

Functional Patterns has gone through the rigorous process of taking these complex ideas and made a functional training program around them that anyone can do.

How Does Functional Patterns Work?

What Is Involved In Functional Patterns?

The main tools used include gait cycle and postural assessment alongside 100% Individualized corrective training in both group and 1-on-1 settings.

Assessment: Our comprehensive initial consult involves a gait and/or activity assessment, where we analyze your gait cycle in slow motion and highlight dysfunctions present. This enables us to tailor a program that suits your body and not just a cookie cutter approach. We will then take you through myo-fascial release (trigger-point massage) techniques. Specific postural correctives, chambers and dynamic exercises may follow depending on how your body handles each level of exercise.

Training: Following your initial consult, we will continue to build on the techniques you learned through chambers, correctives and dynamic exercise. As gait cycle results are our number one metric to judge objectively your progress, we will usually take video again of running/sprinting/your specific activity during these sessions. Throughout your sessions, we will work on breaking down the dysfunctions that lead to your pain or dysfunctions while building new, functional patterns. This will result in a dramatic decrease in pain and an improvement in structural alignment while also improving movement, agility, strength, posture, aesthetic and overall quality of life.
